There are several different types of conversion kits that can turn a beach cruiser into a motorized bicycle. There is what is known as a ‘hub’, which is a motor that is built directly into the wheel of the bicycle, typically the rear wheel. Electromagnetic fields start a process where the hub motor wheel tries to duplicate the process. Some motor kits have a cog that is meant to turn the bicycle chain. These motors are generally dependable and can handle a decent amount of wear and tear. Sometimes the motor is mounted into the frame or the rack, using a chain or belt that causes one of the wheels to spin. In some cases, power is transferred through a process called ‘friction drive’, which uses a roller or rubber belt to turn the tire while the motor is mounted directly above it.
