The laws surrounding electric beach cruisers have been established at the federal level by most of the western world, including the United States, Canada, and Europe. These laws are mainly centered on safety, however. When it comes to the legality of street riding, the jurisdiction lies with the individual states. In Florida, for instance, an electric bicycle may not exceed twenty miles an hour, and a seat may not extend over twenty five inches. A person about to embark on a motorized bicycle trip would have to check with their state laws to make sure that is okay but most states allow motorized bicycles on the road when the speed limit is lower than 35 miles an hour. In addition, the electric bicycle is not considered a motor vehicle, so there is no need for license plates or drivers licenses. This makes an electric bicycle appealing to an even wider range of people.
